Further investigation indicates the boat was "allowed" to sail with the Mini40's even though it was able to be "slewed". Perhaps "anything was legal unless you were told it wasn't" ... which would be similar to the sort of commentary that was received when we first asked pointed questions of the French back in late 1999 and their answer didn't do much to give direction to builders who wanted to experiment.
My theory, is that while it raced with Mini40's it probably wasn't allowed to garner any trophies or championship points. (Just an assumption on my part).
So to answer the concerns noted in the above post in the "General" portion of the forum, ...... regarding a possible loophole, ....... the maximum overall length of a Formula 48 remains at 48 inches. Obviously anything greater than the class specifications would be subject to protest.
When (if) the F-48's start on a competitive racing schedule here in the U.S., I would hope that the Class Rules would be followed at local venues - but that's not to mean that two or all owners at the event couldn't agree to sail together with something outside the rules.
If it were a championship format, then the Class Rules would be followed, and they seem pretty clear about maximum overall length and maximum overall beam. (limited to 48 inches)
