Well, yesterday I had the fun of sailing the MultiONE for the first time. Didn't get a chance to post it here last night, and today some of the excitment has worn off. I posted the "lively" version of the days event on Chad's RCSailingnet forum. Won't repeat the post here since it is very much biased to the first outing. You can read the first impression on Chad's site.
1100 Square inches of sail, and winds that were about 12 mph with gusts to 15 made for interesting first sail.
Surprisingly, the design proved to be fine, and handling, while very fast can be improved. A new rudder with less negative angle to the "T" foil is needed for heavy winds. While OK for medium and light winds, a bit too much downforce and a bit of stern "squatting" resulted.
Also need to adjust jib slot to be a bit more open for sailing upwind. I think it was backwinding the main so need to correct that. Finally, I do need a hatch cover, and that will be my next important project - finish it up to cover the electronics.
I thought I might need a foam mast tip float, but actually for the 45 minutes or so of sailing, I never felt it was close to a pitchpole.
In general I am very pleased with the performance, and it reminds me why I enjoy fast multihulls. There is still a lot of tuning to be done, and learning to sail it at it's optimum performance will take a bit of time, but in due time, I will have it at it's peak of performance.
Am thinking of a possible project for fall/winter which is to fabricate solid foam blanks for floats and main hull and skin with glass. Add mounting reinforcement for beams and standing rigging and then hollow out the main hull for radio gear. See if there is any interest in going this far with a "Kit" and all the owner would need to do is mount radio equipment, get/build a set of cross beams, and find a rig from an existing 1 Meter boat. Then again, now that I have had so much initial fun with the 1 Meter, I need to get the F-48 back into production and get it on the water too.
Later guys.
